Introduction

This trilogy is all about the Eurorack module BENJOLIN. The module is a DIY project by Rob Hordijk sold by a few modular brands. Since soldering is not my best skill I got the module from Jan de Block a Belgium musician (and owner of the Modular404 label).

Benjolin Module

When I saw a video about the Benjolin I felt that it would be a great add to me set up. The module is based on 2 oscillators, has an onboard filter called “rungler” and a sort of loop-function.

The cool thing about the Benjolin is the fact that the oscillators (can) modulate each other plus the rungler and some loop-function. So turning one knob has effect on several settings: it is a combined drone, chaos, bass, percussion module and a challenge to control (which is a good thing).

Benjolin Trilogy

Integrating a new module in a live set up isn’t always easy, so I have a sort of common approach to test a module in several patches in order to decide which case is the best surrounding. Testing the Benjolin I used the modulation cv in (track called MISO), worked with only the Benjolin knobs (track SOLO) and used the KOMA Komplex Sequencer controlling the modulation cv.

All tracks have a long fade in/put, plus a Moog Mother 32 noise sound driven by a slow LFO.

While testing I got even more excited playing the Benjolin live. The 3 tracks give a flavor of the sound capabilities (note: read “some of the capabilities”).
